Abstract

Urdu poetry in the subcontinent of Pakistan and India has always played an active role in processes of social change, political awakening, and cultural formation. This research study examines the social role of Urdu poetry using historical, critical, and analytical methodologies. From the early classical poets to the Progressive Movement, modernism, and the contemporary digital age, Urdu poetry has not only addressed themes of social issues, political oppression, religious harmony, gender equality, and national identity but has also had a practical impact on them. The research clarifies how poetic gatherings (mushairas), literary movements, the film industry, and modern media have helped turn Urdu poetry into a medium of public communication, fostering social awareness. Through the works of major poets such as Mir, Ghalib, Iqbal, Faiz, Faraz, Kishwar Naheed, and others, Urdu poetry has not only reached artistic heights but has also made an unforgettable contribution to the struggles for social justice, freedom, and human dignity.
