Anwar al-Asrar: A Journey in Tafsir and Irfan
Abstract
This study presents an in-depth examination of the life, intellectual contributions, and enduring spiritual influence of Shaykh Isa Jandullah—a distinguished Islamic scholar, Sufi mentor, and reformist figure of the 10th century Hijri. Originating from the historic region of Sindh and later settling in Burhanpur, India, Shaykh Isa was revered for his profound command of Qur’anic exegesis, Hadith sciences, Islamic jurisprudence, and spiritual discipline. He was honored with exalted titles such as Sahib al-Tafsir, Ayn al-‘Urafa’, and al-Masih al-Awliya’, reflecting his multifaceted scholarly stature. Rooted in a noble lineage embedded within the religious and academic traditions of Sindh and the Indian subcontinent, he was born in the village of Pat in 962 AH and lived approximately 69 years. Throughout his life, he played a pivotal role in advancing Islamic knowledge, guiding spiritual seekers, and championing religious revival. His family upheld a strong legacy of promoting Tawheed, reviving Sunnah practices, eradicating bid‘ah, and engaging in da‘wah and jihad as essential dimensions of Islamic reform.
