An analysis of the intellectual differences between Ghalib and Iqbal
Abstract
Mirza Ghalib and Allama Muhammad Iqbal are considered two of the greatest poets of Urdu literature, but there are significant differences in their intellectual tendencies, concept of life and poetic objectives. Both considered issues such as human existence, the universe and destiny, but their conclusions and perspectives are different from each other.
For Ghalib life is a complex mystery and enigma that cannot be fully understood. The element of wonder, doubt and quest is prominent in his poetry. He considers the hidden secrets of the universe but raises questions instead of reaching any final conclusion. On the contrary, Iqbal calls life action, movement and continuous struggle. According to him, the purpose of man is to achieve heights by utilizing his abilities. Iqbal's poetry invites hope, faith and action.
For Ghalib man is aware of his weaknesses, desires and limitations. For him, man is a sensitive and intellectual being who tries to understand the mysteries of the universe.
For Iqbal, man is the bearer of "self" and the vicegerent of God. He considers man as the source of willpower, self-confidence and creativity. Iqbal's ideal man creates his own destiny.
Ghalib gives great importance to intellect and thought. Philosophical reflection is prominent in his poetry and he tries to look at problems from a rational angle.
Although Iqbal does not deny the importance of intellect, he gives love a higher position than intellect. According to him, it is love that leads a person to action, creation and closeness to Allah.
Ghalib's style is questioning and curious. He also ponders religious issues and sometimes seems to challenge traditional concepts. For him, spirituality is a personal experience. Iqbal's intellectual system is based on a new interpretation of Islamic teachings and Sufism. He considers Islam to be a dynamic and revolutionary force that builds both the individual and society
Ghalib's poetry is primarily an expression of human feelings, philosophical problems and internal experiences. His emphasis is more on the inner world of the individual. Iqbal uses poetry as a means of awakening the nation, reforming society, and intellectual revolution. The purpose of his poetry is to give the nation a message of movement, self-reliance, and freedom.
