The Qur'anic Concept of Women's Dignity, Modesty, and Privacy in Surah An-Nur: An Analysis in the Context of Contemporary Social Challenges

Abstract

The rapid transformation of contemporary societies through globalization, digital media, and evolving cultural norms has significantly influenced perceptions of women's dignity, modesty, and personal privacy. These developments have generated complex ethical and social challenges, including the objectification of women, violations of privacy, cyber harassment, and the weakening of moral values. In this context, Surah An-Nur provides a comprehensive Qur'anic framework for safeguarding women's dignity while promoting individual rights, moral responsibility, and social harmony. This study explores the Qur'anic concept of women's dignity, modesty, and privacy as presented in Surah An-Nur and examines its relevance in addressing contemporary social challenges.

Using a qualitative research methodology based on thematic content analysis of the Qur'anic text, classical and contemporary Qur'anic exegeses (Tafsir), and relevant scholarly literature, the study analyzes key verses concerning modesty, hijab, lowering the gaze, protection against false accusations, respect for personal privacy, family ethics, and social conduct. The research also investigates the practical implications of these teachings in relation to current issues such as digital privacy, social media ethics, gender exploitation, sexual harassment, and the preservation of family values.

The findings reveal that Surah An-Nur establishes a balanced and holistic framework that simultaneously protects women's dignity, guarantees their social respect, and promotes ethical responsibilities for both men and women. Rather than imposing restrictions, the Qur'anic directives are shown to preserve personal honor, strengthen family institutions, foster mutual respect, and contribute to a morally responsible society. The study concludes that the principles articulated in Surah An-Nur remain highly relevant for addressing contemporary social challenges and provide practical guidance for developing ethical awareness, safeguarding women's rights, and promoting social justice within modern Muslim societies. The paper recommends integrating Qur'anic ethical values into educational programs, public awareness initiatives, and policy discussions to reinforce a culture of dignity, modesty, privacy, and respect in the contemporary world.
