The Role of the Principles of Hadith in the Acceptability of Sufi Narrations
Abstract
This critical work examines the critical role of the principles of Hadith (Usul al-Hadith) in establishing the authenticity and acceptability of Sufi traditions (Sufiyana Riwayat). It discusses how Sufi traditions, including virtues of deeds (Fada’il al-A’mal), remembrances and invocations (Dhikr wa Adhkar), miracles of saints (Karamat al-Awliya), and spiritual discourses (Malfuzat), need to be assessed by the strict standards of Hadith sciences to ensure that they concur with Shariah. The article starts by defining the status quo of the Quran and Sunnah as the main sources of Sufism and that true Tasawwuf is the inner aspect of Islam and not another system. It examines the historical connection between Muhaddithin (Hadith scholars) and Sufis with such notable Muhaddith-Sufi as Imam al-Ghazali, Imam al-Nawawi, and Shaykh Abdul Qadir al-Jilani who combined Hadith scholarship with spiritual cleansing. It also talks of important principles of Hadith such as sanad (chain of transmission), matn (text) critique, shudhudh (irregularity) avoidance, and illah (defect concealed). Real life examples are given based on the narrations of Dhikr, Karamat and Malfuzat in order to show how these criteria differentiate genuine Sufi teachings and those that are fabricated or weak. The spreading of fake Sufi stories and forged Hadiths faster than ever on the modern digital platform has increased the necessity of Usul al-Hadith. The article emphasizes the essence of these values in guiding the younger generation, purifying Tasawwuf of innovations and superstitions and bringing its revival as a scholarly discipline. Through the application of the Hadith methodology, Sufi traditions may be maintained in the spirit of its original purpose; they should foster moral and spiritual excellence, and be well rooted in the Quran and Sunnah. The paper finds that Usul al-Hadith is a crucial protection of the integrity of Sufism both in classical and modern contexts.
