Dr. Nazar Khaleeq as a Critic and Researcher: Intellectual Dimensions and Status in Contemporary Criticism
Abstract
This research article critically evaluates the intellectual contribution and methodological approach of Dr. Nazar Khaleeq as a distinguished figure in contemporary Urdu literary criticism and research. Tracing the evolutionary trajectory of Urdu criticism from early biographical compendiums (Tazkiras) and Altaf Hussain Hali’s seminal *Muqaddama to Marxist, psychological, stylistic, and post-modernist discourses the study highlights the pivotal role of text-centric and reader-oriented practical criticism. Dr. Nazar Khaleeq navigates beyond rigid ideological dogmatism, advocating for literature that retains communicability, aesthetic pleasure, and socio-psychological relevance.
The paper examines his critical paradigm across four key dimensions: opposition to abstract absurdity in modernist fiction, preservation of the sociological and moral integrity of narrative art (exemplified through his comparative analysis of Sultan Jamil Naseem and Munshi Premchand), reinterpretation of universal and mystical values (particularly his humanist reading of Rabindranath Tagore’s Gitanjali), and an objective, evidence-based prose style. Furthermore, the article explores his rigorous research methodology (minhaj-e-tahqeeq), emphasizing his deep command over classical Arabic, Urdu, and Western lexicographical sources. Special attention is given to his theoretical resolution of Sarqah (literary plagiarism) versus Tawarud (unintentional thematic coincidence), wherein he establishes clear boundaries between deliberate artistic dishonesty and innocent intellectual convergence. Ultimately, Dr. Nazar Khaleeq emerges as a balanced, objective, and synthesis-driven scholar whose dual contribution as a critic and researcher offers a vital framework for contemporary Urdu scholarship.
