Abstract

The twentieth century holds great significance in the history of the Indian subcontinent, particularly for the Muslim struggle for independence and the preservation of a distinct identity. Among the leading intellectuals and reformers of this era was Manazir Ahsan Gilani (1892–1956), a prominent Islamic scholar born in Bihar, educated in Tonk and Deoband, and later a distinguished teacher at Osmania University, Hyderabad. His contributions to Islamic sciences especially the Qur’an, Hadith, and Seerah left a lasting impact on generations of modern-educated students. This study explores Gilani’s scholarly services and distinctive thoughts, analyzing the unique features of his views that often diverged from the consensus (jumhoor) of scholars. The core objectives include highlighting his academic and religious efforts, comparing his views with mainstream scholarly positions, and investigating the methods of reconciliation and preference in cases of divergence. While prior research has been conducted on various aspects of Gilani’s life such as his approach to comparative religion, biographical writing style, exegetical notes on Surah Al-Kahf, and his role in modernizing Islamic studies this work stands out by presenting a comprehensive and critical analysis of his intellectual contributions in relation to the broader scholarly tradition. This research fills a critical gap by delving into the nuances of Gilani’s thought, offering insights into the compatibility and distinctions between his views and those of traditional scholars. It aims to underscore the importance of his legacy in shaping contemporary Islamic thought in South Asia and beyond.
